I'll attempt to explain what you need to know about web hosting. Web Hosting usually involves your e-mail hosting as well. Many have no idea what sets one web hosting company from another except for the frills of easy-to-use tools. There's much more to it than that. Dedicated Hosting is the type of service you have when you have complete control of one server machine. This requires some knowledge and you are responsible for the software and all services running on that machine.

Shared Hosting is the type of service you have when you share a server. This is most common and less expensive.

Bandwidth is a term that refers to amount of data that flows up and down the communication line with the Internet. Many web hosting companies, mine included, let you have unlimited bandwidth. However, there's another consideration here. If I gave you a bucket of water and told you that you could have unlimited access then handed you a thin straw, you may be a bit disappointed. Same applies to your web hosting. You may get a thin straw or a faucet. This will affect how fast your web hosting package can feed web pages to the people who access it.

Disk Space is easy to understand. One catch to look out for. Your web site usually won't require a lot of space. However, your e-mail can consume a vast amount of space. Beware of GoDaddy and others who limit your e-mail disk space and charge extra for more. Their intentions are to force you to be diligent in keeping your e-mail folders clean but hides this extra charge. I prefer to let you use what you need but will keep your junk and deleted item folders clean.

Reliability is crucial. Your web site must stay up 24/7 and so does your e-mail. Whether you use Shared Hosting or Dedicated Hosting, your server probably sits in a rack that is hooked to cables that are hooked to cables that are hooked to cables. Eventually your cable leads to an Internet cable. With the complexity of this network compounded with the sensitivity of your server itself, reliabilty is only as good as the technicians who maintain it.

Databases are also a factor. If you require a robust, monitored, backed up database then I offer SQL Server in some of my packages. Your alternatives are MS Access, SQL Lite, mySQL, and any other database which you can have installed.

Control Panels are offered so you can do-it-yourself. I have found that they are complicated for the average person to use and end up causing you (and me) more problems than not. I'd rather just have you call me and tell me what you need, your personal control panel. If you need another web site setup or doamin registered, call me and I'll set it up for you at no extra charge.

Integrity is all about your trust in the person or enterprise responsible for your web hosting service. How long have they been in business? Will they abandon you? Are they responsible to keep your server safe?

I mainly offer Shared Hosting but you may consult with me to have a dedicated server setup. I offer support in configuring and maintaining servers for you at a rate of $65 / hour. You can use my time for setting up web sites, creating databases, monitoring performance, tuning, and many other functions needed to support a server. It's usually about 10 hours per month but can vary depending on your particular needs. I can also teach you how to do it yourself. Don't be fooled by cheap virtual servers that don't give you direct access. To remain competetive I offer unlimited bandwidth and I don't restrict your bandwidth through a small straw. In reality, nobody can have unlimited, unrestricted bandwidth for a fixed price. The same applies to disk space. All web hosting will say unlimited to be competetive. We bank on the fact that almost every business that hosts with us will not require much. That's why I offer tiered packages to let you grow from the least expensive to the most expensive if needed. Besides, I want you to be satisfied with the web host and e-mail hosting services I provide and protect the integrity of the server.

My business is run by me but I have several collegues that support me for free services. If something were to happen to me, your service would be uniterrupted and continue to be run by the next person in line to take over the server. The old school of a large business is not needed and outdated. A big company can fold overnight and offers no security blanket for you. A big business cannot come close to the type of support I can provide. I have limited slots I will support and never take on more than I or my collegues can support. If your application for service is accepted then you will be well cared for.
